چکیده

Abstract Despite only comprising seven species, extant sea turtles (Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae) display great ecological diversity, with most species inhabiting a unique dietary niche as adults. This adult diversity is remarkable given that all share the same juveniles. These ontogenetic shifts in diet, well dramatic increase body size, make an excellent group to examine how morphological arises by allometric processes life habit specialisation. Using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics, we characterise allometry skulls of evaluate variation context phylogenetic history diet. Among sample, olive ridley ( Lepidochelys olivacea ) has seemingly average turtle skull shape generalised whereas green Chelonia mydas hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata show different extremes snout associated their modes food gathering (grazing vs. grasping, respectively). Our findings corroborate previous suggestions leatherback Dermochelys coriacea paedomorphic, having similar proportions hatchlings other retaining hatchling-like diet relatively soft bodied organisms. The flatback Natator depressus shows but less extreme pattern. By contrast, loggerhead Caretta caretta peramorphic signal increased jaw muscle volumes allow predation on hard shelled prey. Kemp’s kempii compared its sister ridley, includes harder prey items such crabs. We suggest may be significant factor driving differences among species. Although small number limits statistical power, shape, are consistent hypothesis trajectory facilitated diversification observed increasing vertebrate groups.

The Head and Neck Anatomy of Sea Turtles (Cryptodira: Chelonioidea) and Skull Shape in Testudines

BACKGROUND Sea turtles (Chelonoidea) are a charismatic group of marine reptiles that occupy a range of important ecological roles. However, the diversity and evolution of their feeding anatomy remain incompletely known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Using computed tomography and classical comparative anatomy we describe the cranial anatomy in two sea turtles, the loggerhead (Caretta caretta)...

Ontogenetic Allometry in Shape and Flexibility Underlies Life History Patterns of Labrid Cleaning Behavior.

Body shape plays a crucial role in the movement of organisms. In the aquatic environment, the shape of the body, fins, and the underlying axial skeleton reflect the ability of organisms to propel and maneuver through water. Ontogenetic changes in body shape and flexibility of the axial skeleton may coincide with shifts in ecology (e.g., changes in habitat or feeding mode). We use the evolution ...

Ontogenetic allometry of the Beagle

BACKGROUND Mammalian juveniles undergo dramatic changes in body conformation during development. As one of the most common companion animals, the time line and trajectory of a dog's development and its body's re-proportioning is of particular scientific interest. Several ontogenetic studies have investigated the skeletal development in dogs, but none has paid heed to the scapula as a critical p...

Bio-inspired Robot Design Considering Load-Bearing and Kinematic Ontogeny of Chelonioidea Sea Turtles

This work explores the physical implications of variation in fin shape and orientation that correspond to ontogenetic changes observed in sea turtles. Through the development of a bio-inspired robotic platform – CTurtle – we show that 1) these ontogenetic changes apparently occupy stable extrema for either load-bearing or high-velocity movement, and 2) mimicry of these variations in a robotic s...

Intersexual allometry differences and ontogenetic shifts of coloration patterns in two aquatic turtles, Graptemys oculifera and Graptemys flavimaculata

Coloration can play critical roles in a species' biology. The allometry of color patterns may be useful for elucidating the evolutionary mechanisms responsible for shaping the traits. We measured characteristics relating to eight aspects of color patterns from Graptemys oculifera and G. flavimaculata to investigate the allometric differences among male, female, and unsexed juvenile specimens. A...
